.10. Minority Report
Underrated Speilburg movie if you ask me. Set in 2054 the film is about the chief of police, known as pre-crime, who is convicted of the future murder of another man. The plot and entire world of the movie is set up very nicely and following Tom Cruise as he tries to figure out if the pre-cogs preminition was true or if he has a minority report of his own is very fascinating and inventive.
9. 12 Monkeys
My personal favorite terry giliam movie. Its freaky, its dark, its demented, and its very funny all at the same time. It isnt very hard for terry giliam to make a movie like this because basically all of his movies are like this. However 12 Monkeys has one of the best plot lines and twists that really make you think after its over. I wont spoil it but all im gonna say is that it really blows your mind.
8. District 9
It still amazes me that the budet for this was so cheap. The effects are spectacular and the way that neil blomkamp uses the shake cam puts movies like cloverfeild and quarentine to shame. I also like the fact that it doesn't take place in a big american city like most of the other alien invasion movies. This is the movie that should have gotten all the recognition that avatar did in 2009.
7. Total Recall
This completely surprised me. I thought it was gonna just be another stupid but hilariously good arnold flick and it ended up being an interesting action film that had a great plot and was actually kind of a smart script. I also din't relize that the director of robocop did this too, so that helped. Great movie
6. Star Trek (2009)
I was not always a Star Trek fan. Before this came out, I had never even seen any of the movies or episodes, I still haven't seen the episodes actually. But after I saw this I was completely surprised. I ended up watching all the movies after seeing this and this was the best of all of them. It was action packed, had a perfect cast, and great story and direction. Can't wait to see the sequal.
5. The Matrix
Influenced every action and sci-fi movie that came after it. Not only did it create ground breaking effects, but for its time it had one of the most unique stories ever. The Wachowski Brothers have not even come close to the success of this and may never again. This is also the only movie that keanu reeves is pretty decsent in and if you can make keanu reeves be a pretty decsent actor, than it must be good.
4. T2
It can be very rare that a sequal out does the original but this is one of the exceptions. This brought everything up a notch. This time there's two termonators, one of them is liquid metal, the other one is austrian, the liquid one is after john connor this time around, and there's fantastic action, effects, and one liners. This was James Cameron in his prime. And I don't think he was ever able to be this good again.
3. Moon
This probably isn't familier to many people being that it's a sundance film. Moon stars Sam Rockwell who is in this movie by himself for about the whole thing. He is an astronaut who runs a station on the moon that harvests energy for the earth. It takes place during the last week of his 3 year contract and he suppose to go home in a few days, but he discovers a very alarming secret of the base and the company that hired him for the job. It is brilliantly done and really pulls you in. You think that it's going in one direction, then goes a completely different direction. If youre a fan of 2001 then this is right up your ally.
2. Blade Runner
When asked, what is the best Ridley Scott sci-fi film, most would actually reply, "Alien. Duh". But I say nay nay. Blade Runner outwits, outplays, and outlasts Alien in almost everyway. This is the quintessential sci-fi film. It is shot in such a way that really makes you think deeply about each shot. The script is pure genious having created a world unmatched by almost any other movie. The acting is superb with one of the baddest mo fo's leading the lot as one of his most memorable characters, Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard. A truly amazing peice of film that in the sci-fi world can be topped only by one other film.
1. Star Wars
If you know me, you that I am one of the biggest Star Wars fans around and I can go on for hours about how this is not only my favorite sci-fi movie of all time but just flat out my favorite movie of all time. I'm even a big fan of the prequals (so what, sue me. They have redeming factors). The entire series creates a complete world that no other movie was ever able to fully duplicate or improve upon. When you watch Star Wars you care about the characters and story and are completly captivated by the magic it all brings to the screen. To be able to make a world from thin air and make it have so much detail is something that is extremly rare in cinema today. That's why Star Wars stands (to me) as the greatest sci-fi movie ever created.
